From a small book store with stationery items to a premier publishing house of the Northeast, Lawyer’s Book Stall has come a long way over seven decades.
The genesis of the book shop dates back to the days of the Quit India Movement. Bichitra Narayan Dutta Baruah was practicing at Gauhati High Court when his zeal for self-employment led him to quit his job. He opened a bookstall at Panbazar in 1942 and interestingly named it by his erstwhile profession.
“In 1970, my grandfather Bichitra Narayan Dutta Baruah handed over the mantle to my father Khagendra Narayan Dutta Baruah,†said Bhaskar Dutta Baruah, the current owner of LBS.
Initially, LBS had a select category of books along with a host of stationery items. As the years rolled by, their collection increased and it soon became a treasure trove of books and a nurturing ground for litterateurs and academics of the region. “In 1980, my father founded LBS Publications....
